Cosmic Constellation
The Cosmic Craft Constellation is an immersive, community-centered installation that brings the stars and warmth of a handcrafted cosmos to Miami—a city where stars are rare, and snow is never seen. Designed by fiber artist Karelle Levy, it’s a touchable constellation of yarn pom-poms created in community workshops, where each “star” represents its maker’s unique place in the universe. Nostalgic, cozy, and evocative of home, the installation bridges Miami’s urban glow with a celestial experience meant for all ages.
The multi-sensory experience unfolds through three key components:
Video Art by Mariana Mendoza: Mendoza’s video mapping projects cosmic visuals across the installation, making the yarn stars pulse and transform with light and shadow. Her projection work brings depth to the space, creating a celestial landscape that feels alive.
Soundscape by Afrobeta: Miami’s electronic duo Afrobeta adds a soothing, ambient soundscape that enhances the cosmic atmosphere, blending subtle rhythms and cosmic textures that invite calm exploration and connection.
Touchable Art by Karelle Levy: The installation is intentionally tactile, encouraging visitors to touch and interact with the soft pom-poms, creating a child-friendly, welcoming space. This interactive element helps foster a sense of home and connection.
Through its community workshop, The Cosmic Craft Constellation encourages everyone to see themselves as artists, becoming an integral part of the installation. By inviting touch, light, and sound into the experience, it offers a unique, inclusive environment that fosters wonder, joy, and a sense of belonging in our shared universe.
The Cosmic Constellation is made possible thanks to support from the Rhythm Foundation, Lion Brand & Silk City Fibers, and the Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation through the CreARTE grant. We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our community supporters who hosted pom pom making workshops to create the stars in our constellation!
